La disoccupazione giovanile in particolare si è rivelata allarmante. Nel settembre del 2011, 5.308.000 giovani (sotto i 25 anni) erano disoccupati nella Ue-27, di cui 3,290 milioni nella zona euro. I tassi più bassi sono stati osservati in Austria (7,1%) e  Paesi Bassi (8,0%), e il più alto in Spagna (48,0%) e Grecia (43,5% in luglio).

In September 2011 the unemployment rate in the EU was 9.7% and the rate in the euro area 10.2%. Available date since 2000 reveals this is the highest rate in over 10 years - increasing the pressure on the employment target of the Europe 2020 Strategy.

Youth unemployment in particular was alarming. In September 2011, 5.308 million young persons (under-25s) were unemployed in the EU27, of whom 3.290 million were in the euro area. The lowest rates were observed in Austria (7.1%) and the Netherlands (8.0%), and the highest in Spain (48.0%) and Greece (43.5% in July).
